21 Jun 20. PARISH REGISTER RESEARCH

For those of you who are doing your own family history research, I came across a prime example today of why you should ALWAYS CHECK THE ORIGINAL REGISTER wherever possible and don't just rely on the indexed information. James Stoakes was baptised in Aldington, Kent in 1792. According to the indexed record he was the son of William and Frances. HOWEVER on checking the original record a very different situation emerged. There was a note against his christening entry which said "James son of Frances Stoakes, supposed illegitimate, her husband William Stoakes having been absent from her above five years and enlisted for the East Indies." Several children continued to be christend by Frances with similar notes. Banns were read in 1792 for Frances Stoakes and Samuel Rogers but a marriage didn't follow. She finally married him in 1800. No doubt she couldn't prove that William was deceased and was unable to marry until a set time of his absence had elapsed. So, there will be Stoakes descendants of the children christened between 1792 and 1800 who ought really to be Rogers, not Stoakes!!! So, always check original records where possible. Burials sometimes give a cause of death especially if it was some kind of accident. Baptisms will give alias names and other circumstances as per this example. We will probably never know whether William actually did go to the East Indies (not found a definitive record of him there yet) or was it just a way of disappearing and starting afresh elsewhere???
