Brick Walls and how to get around them
6 Weeks, 1 x 2 Hour session per week. Max 6 people per session. Includes free light refreshments and handouts. You will need to bring your own laptop or tablet and have reasonable competence in using the Internet. All sessions incluce practical workshop time.
Week 1 - Gathering information, talking to elderly relatives. The very beginning is you! A bit about personal histories. Standard formats for recording data. Tips on talking to elderly relatives.
Week 2 - Using civil registration as a source. Primary and secondary sources. History of civil registration. Use of free websites to access civil registration indexes. What indexes and certificates tell us.
Week 3 - Using census returns as a source. History, reliability and value of census returns, including the 1939 register. Use of free sites to access census returns.
Week 4 - Using parish registers as a source. History and value of parish registers. Use of free website to access parish register databases online.
Week 5 - Data storage, how to organise your new tree. Paper or computer? Online or offline? What is a gedcom?
Week 6 - other sources and workshop. Where else can you find information about your ancestors? Help with your individual research

Week 6 - Group requested topics and final workshop
Maximum 4 people per session. A two hour session where you can bring along your research for some individual guidance.
